While this does happen and you should be on the lookout for shady sellers, that doesn’t mean the world of used parts is all bleak!

Is a used car part the way to go?
Before you start buying everything used you need to consider this first. There are a number of parts that just aren’t safe to replace with used and worn out parts. How can you tell if the part is better off purchased new? Chances are something like a cracked Tail Light or motor mount are fine but anything that naturally wears out over time is better off bought new. If you’re not sure you’ll to want to ask a mechanic or the seller if you feel they’re trustworthy. If you have a personal trusted mechanic, they’re a really good source for information as you probably will be taking your car to them for an inspection anyways.

If you’re going to a local used parts store you can probably take the part in with you to help find it. It can save a lot of time and headaches for you and the seller, as well as prevent multiple trips to the store. On that note, you’ll also want to know if the part is returnable in case you find out that it won’t work for your vehicle or you bought the wrong style.
Always make sure that the seller has a good reputation.
When shopping online or face to face, this is very important! It is much easier to scam someone online than many people think so you’ll want to be wary and make sure there is a legitimate address and number you can turn to if there’s any trouble. For local purchases you can capitalize on word of mouth and references from your mechanic.
Another good way to tell if a seller is trustworthy is by always asking for a warranty. If the seller truly believes their part is in great condition they are far more likely to offer you some form of warranty than not.
Consider the parts you’re purchasing.
You’ll want to know a bit of the history of the part in question. How many miles has it been put through? Is it used, repaired or remanufactured? These can sometimes make all the difference between a good buy and a total rip off.
If you’re purchasing used body parts you’re probably going to have to consider paint mismatching. So ask the dealer if they think you can still get a good color match repainting the part. Many colors are quite difficult to change to match the paint of your car so you’ll want to consider this to avoid any extra costly expenses (such as sand blasting the paint off) if you’re set on having a uniform look.
Don’t ever feel bad for asking questions! Sellers are often very used to handling novice questions because they talk to amateur mechanics all the time. It’s far better to know more about the process of the repair and the part than to know less and be blindsided later. If you feel a little foolish for it don’t be. Most guys will give you far more credit for fixing it yourself than otherwise. So with this knowledge in mind, start saving money on your auto repairs with used parts!
