Most of people all over the world have a mobile phone and you will see many people sending messages as they are walking on the street. Why leads to the phone normal running? It is the battery which is lithium ion battery equipped with a mobile phone. Do you have an emergency flashlight? It is powered by lithium ion or NiMH battery. These batteries are small which is different from Car Battery that is found on a car. If you have a car, you will notice that you need to use the car battery to jump-start your car. In fact, it is lead acid battery which is the technical term in the battery industry. You might never hear of it before but you must know the motorcycle battery, golf cart battery, marine battery etc. If you learn more about them, you will recognize they are all lead acid batteries.
What is it? You will wonder. Because we just know batteries special Li-ion rechargeable battery which are often used in our life. Lead acid battery is also rechargeable battery which has been used for over 140 years. They are widely be used in many industries, such telecommunication, power systems, radio, and television systems, solar, UPS, electric vehicles, automobile, forklifts, emergency lights, etc. If I didn’t have an electric vehicle, maybe I don’t know these batteries either though I might ever use them.
Why did I never know it before if it is really that useful? The reason is that they are not seen frequently in our daily. Their compact size decides they are not able to be the same portability with Li-ion rechargeable battery. Plus, they used a reversible chemical reaction to store electric energy. It can be utilized with a permutation of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to change electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back. Scientifically it is considered that lead acid batteries are harmful for our health as it may create burns and other permanent damage if we come in close contact with it due to the use of diluted sulphuric acid electrolyte. This is its disadvantage but that doesn’t limit its usage. However, it is worth to note it needs maintenance when used. Add distilled water if it is required, because the water evaporates in the chemical reaction process.
Compared to solar battery, the lead acid battery is a little environmental unfriendly. But due to its long life and high energy, it is also very useful. About 97% of these batteries are recycled according the Battery Council International, and can be reused in the making of new batteries based on the recent survey reports in this area. So we can also say they are environmental friendly.
Lead acid batteries have myriad uses and are one of the most useful batteries with the longest life cycle, the greatest energy density per pound, and the most mature recycling infrastructure of similarly priced batteries.
