Any current or previous drivers have an opinion on the Vw BEETLE?
Im thinking of buying a 2000 VW Beetle but I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews on it. I heard it takes a lot to repair the smallest things. The used car dealer wants $6,500 for it. It’s a manual 5 speed and the engine is 2.0L I4. It also has 62k miles on it. Is this a good deal?
Coming from a dealer $6500 seems like a good price with only 62,000 miles on it. In times of a better economy I don’t doubt it would be priced about $2000 more. My daughter drives a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle GL and she thinks it is a great little car and a joy to drive. I have driven it a few times and I think it is a bit uncomfortable but it is fun to drive. One thing for sure is that it handles real well and gets excellent traction in snow, although the automatic transmission shift from gear to gear has a very noticeable lag in very cold weather even after the engine warms to operating temperature and even in our normal midwest cold temperatures it has a nasty tendency to hang in 1st gear if the engine is not given a good warm up before driving. But the one you are thinking about buying has a manual transmission and so you won’t have to worry about automatic transmission problems like that. As far as the repair work it has needed, right from the outset it was in the shop for battery cable connection problems and problems with the hood release. Even now the hood won’t release unless someone lifts on the hood while another is pulling the release. It had transmission work done on it and a cracked cylinder head replaced as well a starter replacement and alternator replacement along with the battery connection problems and hood release problems while it was still under the 4 year factory warranty but the dealer has always given her a loaner to drive if it was in the shop more than one day for warranty work. It has been a fairly reliable car since those warranty repairs and the other issues it has had have just been the normal minor stuff and my daughter has been happy with it.

The Love Bug [VHS] $14.99 The box office success of Disney’s 1969 classic The Love Bug inspired a slew of Herbie sequels, and, ultimately, this 1997 remake. Though remakes occasionally best the original (consider Disney’s The Parent Trap), this one does not. It is difficult to match the talents of the original cast–namely Dean Jones, Buddy Hackett, and David Tomlinson. At least the car hasn’t diminished during its 30-year… |
